5 Ways to Slow Down This Fall

Fall is a season that represents change and transition. It is a time when the leaves on the trees turn from green to shades of yellow, orange and red, and the air becomes crisp and cool. However, this transition can sometimes feel slow, and it can be difficult to attune to the changes that are happening around us.

It is important to understand that everything in nature moves at its own pace. Just as the leaves on the trees take their time to change colour and fall to the ground, we too should take our time to adjust to the changes that are happening in our lives. This means being patient with ourselves and allowing ourselves the space to process our emotions and thoughts.

One way to attune to the slowness of fall is to practice mindfulness. This can involve taking a walk in nature and paying attention to the colours and textures of the leaves, the sound of the wind, and the feeling of the cool air on our skin. It can also involve taking the time to reflect on our thoughts and emotions, and allowing ourselves the space to feel them fully.

Another way to attune to the slowness of fall is to practice self-care. This can involve taking care of our physical and emotional needs, such as getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods aligned to the season, and engaging in activities that bring us joy and relaxation. By taking care of ourselves in this way, we can better attune to the changes that are happening around us and find peace in the slowness of fall.

The slowness of fall can be challenging to attune to, but by practicing mindfulness and self-care, we can better adjust to the changes that are happening in our lives. Remember to be patient with yourself and allow yourself the space to process your emotions and thoughts. By doing so, you can find peace and tranquility in the beauty of fall.

1) Practice a Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation is a remarkably transformative practice that can bring about profound changes in your overall well-being and mental clarity. By consciously directing your attention to the present moment and purposefully regulating your breath, you can tap into the intricate workings of your own nervous system, allowing it to recalibrate and regain balance. This practice is not only about slowing down; it is about deepening your connection with your own thoughts, emotions, and surroundings. It invites you to embrace silence as a powerful ally, allowing you to observe and accept whatever arises within you without judgement or resistance. To embark on this journey, you might find it helpful to explore one of the meditations I have created and recorded here.

2) Spend Time in Nature

Nature has an incredible ability to gently guide us towards a state of relaxation and introspection, allowing us to truly immerse ourselves in the present moment. From the simple act of taking a mindful walk through a nearby park, where we can connect and be present with the nature's colours and textures, to embarking on an adventure outdoors; these experiences have the potential to infuse us with a profound sense of grounding and connectivity. The transformative power of nature extends beyond its physical beauty, as it serves as a powerful mirror reflecting back to us the invaluable wisdom of harmonizing with the ever-changing seasons that surround us. It is a form of deep inner and outer connection that can guide us to the rhythm of our hearts and our bodies innate wisdom.

3) Practice Gratitude

Gratitude is a powerful practice that can help us slow down and appreciate the present moment. Sometimes when we are feeling busy and internally feeling the impact of stress, gratitude can shift the inner dialogue and slow down the mind and calm the body. Take some time each day to reflect on the things you’re grateful for. It can be simple. By focusing on the positive aspects of your life, you’ll be better able to appreciate the present moment and feel more connected.

4) Connect with Others or Disconnecting from Others.

Connecting with others is not only important for our holistic, spiritual well-being, but it also has a profound impact on our internal state. When we make genuine connections with people who make us feel safe and regulated, it can create a sense of being held, seen, and heard. These connections provide us with the support and validation we need to navigate life's challenges and cultivate a sense of belonging. However, it's important to recognize that there are times when we may feel burnt out, overwhelmed, or over socialized. In these moments, disconnecting from others can be a healthy and necessary step towards self-care and finding balance. It's crucial to listen to our own needs and honour what feels most nurturing for our overall well-being.

5) Practice Self-Care

Self-care is an essential component of slowing down and honouring where you are at this season. It’s important to take care of yourself both physically and emotionally. Whether it’s through exercise, meditation, or simply by doing the things that make you feel good. Make sure to take some time each day to nurture yourself. Self care can look like saying no and setting boundaries, it might look like taking some time off your phone or it can look like cleaning your home and creating a comfortable environment.

Action steps to slow down

1) Ask yourself: How can I implement some of these practices into my everyday life?

2) Create a sustainable and attainable plan of action. What feels good and what is one thing that you can start with? Starting with one thing is sustainable and more attainable than doing everything all at once.

3) Schedule your day and make space for slowing down.
